Leap Scarecrow Festival
Our Third Class pupils are buzzing with excitement, as their scarecrow leaves the school today to be brought to Leap for the annual Leap Scarecrow Festival
The class decided to design their scarecrow on an educational theme: the Asian Hornet. This choice was inspired by their learning about this species, which is an invasive species and a significant threat to Ireland's native bee population.
The pupils had great fun brainstorming the idea, designing the scarecrow, and bringing the large hornet to life.
This project was much more than just arts and crafts! The pupils gained valuable knowledge on several topics including,
-
Sustainability: recycled and sustainable materials to construct their scarecrow.
-
Native Bees: role of native Irish bees and the importance of protecting them from invasive predators like the Asian Hornet.
-
History of Scarecrows: Background and traditional purpose of scarecrows.
Many thanks to the teachers and staff who helped the class along the way. We wish Third Class the very best of luck in the festival.
