Composting in Schools Programme

21st Sep 2023

We were successful in our application for the Composting in Schools Programme earlier in 2023. Available to schools in the Cork County Council administrative area, this programme included training for schools in best practice composting.  Delivered by Donal from Waste Down, the programme delivered workshops as well as school visits to help set up systems for separating food waste for brown bin collection and establishing composting systems for garden and landscape materials. This learning is tied in with preventing food waste, supporting biodiversity and general environmental awareness in the school.  As we are involved in Green Schools, these were great workshops to compliment such work in the school. Together with our partners in the Timoleague Educational Garden, we have started a composting system there for our garden materials.

Having planted the window boxes back in May and after blossoming into an amazing flower display all summer, 3rd & 4th class emptied them all out into wheelbarrows. They then transported them over to the Educational Garden where they emptied them into the newly build composting system. We look forward to using this compost in the coming years!
