Chess in 4th class
21st Nov 2025
We are delighted that chess has begun in 4th class. Pupils will learn and develop the game of chess each Monday and will take part in a local chess event in January. Many thanks to Denise the local Ficheall co-ordinator for her support and guidance.
Chess is a great way to develop essential life skills. Studies show that playing chess offers significant benefits for young learners by acting as the "art of logical thinking."
Benefits include:
-
Cognitive Boost: Chess helps to improve concentration and focus, enhances memory, develops crucial problem-solving skills, and improves planning and foresight.
-
Social & Emotional Growth: The game teaches good sportsmanship, encouraging children to win with grace and accept losses. It also helps them develop impulse control by requiring them to consider the consequences of their moves before acting.
-
Confidence: Learning and mastering a new skill like chess helps to build mental resilience and confidence.
