1st Class: Playful Learning
1st Class has been busy engaging in many playful learning experiences, recently focusing on Money and Positional Language in Maths, and the theme of Éadaí (Clothes) in Gaeilge.
This approach aligns with the New Primary School Curriculum, which moves away from rote learning toward pupil agency and active engagement.
In Maths the pupils were making abstract concepts tangible:
-
The Class Shop: Pupils practice subtraction by managing "budgets" and making change. Handling coins helps them "see" the everyday Maths in action.
-
Positional Language: To master terms like left, right, beside, and between, the pupils got moving and navigated a course following specific directions.
To bring the theme of Éadaí to life, the pupils moved beyond the textbook and into Aisteoireacht (drama):
-
An Paráid Faisean: Pupils described what they were wearing ("Tá geansaí gorm orm") during their very own classroom fashion show.
