Science Week 2021

15th Nov 2021

Science Week 2021 took place last week from 7th to 14th. The core theme for Science Week 2021 was ‘Creating our Future’. This will explore how science can help us to make positive choices that will impact the environment, our health and our quality of life.

Every class had a wonderful week • Questioning • Observing • Predicting • Investigating and experimenting • Estimating and measuring • Analysing • Sorting and classifying • Recognising patterns • Interpreting • Recording and communicating

Junior Infants were using magnets of different shapes and sizes to explore their effects on different materials. They investigated the fact they magnets attract certain materials. They also explored the effect of heating and cooling on everyday objects, materials & substances.

Senior Infants made lava lamps investigating how materials may be changed by mixing. They also made volcanoes investigating the chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar making carbon dioxide. There was great excitement when they carried out the skittle experiment.

1st & 2nd class were investigating density through removing an orange peel & predicting whether it would float or sink. They also had amazing chemical reactions!

2nd & 3rd class investigated light. They recognised that light comes from different natural & artificial sources. They also investigated between light & materials. They also investigated how boats float.

4th class observed, collected & examined soil samples from our local environment. They visited Fr. Hickey’s garden & he discussed the variety of trees growing there with the class. 4th class attended virtual science events held by MTU & Teagasc. There were many individual & paired experiments carried out in the class all week.

Following on from this year’s Science Week theme of “Creating our Future”, 5th class created models of schools in the future. They also worked on density trying to get an egg to float. They connected with Water Forum & their video on Maintaining our Waterways in support of their ongoing bio project on water quality.

6th class looked at pH indicators, Enzymes in Bananas and Regrowth of vegetables.
They also a Zoom call with Kevin in the labs in Cork County Council talking about How we know the world is round!
